If you’ve seen me around either on the road or perhaps working at your place in North West Tasmania you may have noticed that I have a lot of STIHL equipment in my ute and this is not because I’m sponsored or discounted by STIHL it’s simply because I can rely on them when I’m in some remote locations. I like to take absolutely everything with me because I never know what jobs may arise from day to day.

latest bit of gear the STIHL KombiSystem KM 131 R Professional version
STIHL KombiSystem KM 131 R Professional

This review is for my latest bit of gear the STIHL KombiSystem KM 131 R Professional version which is the top of the range priced at $699 for the engine $299 for the pole saw attachment, $399 for the hedge trimmer attachment plus $199 for the extension which I also got for those higher to reach hedges and tree limbs. At a total of $1600 it wasn’t that cheap but it has proven to be worth it upon my first real jobs today!

Firstly when fully set up it isn’t that light so you would need to be fairly strong to use it for a while. Also I had some trouble figuring out that the attachment needs to be inserted to the red line for it to work correctly. The other thing I had to do was run the pole saw attachment for 5 minutes to allow the bar oil to run through to the chain which is pretty normal anyway.

I found that cutting with the saw was easy it is very good quality. The hedge trimmer is outstanding and just glides across hedges and shrubs with ease I also like using it to shape things too!. The sound isn’t overly loud either although you can feel that the engine has all the grunt you need. It is a quality bit of gear and I don’t regret spending the money at all.

There are quite a few other attachment available for this Kombi engine but I wont be getting any others because I already have blowers, and brush-cutters etc.. on their own. Maybe down the track though there may be a need for it but Ill see what happens.

My rating 4.5 out of 5 the only downfall from 5 stars would be the weight is a little heavy although the extension is made of graphite.

OK so I purchased the Fiskars Powergear Telescopic Tree Pruner for $199 Australian when I encountered a hedge that was so high a ladder wouldn’t do the job and because of the confined area and the fact that the hedge was more over the neighbours fence a scaffold wasn’t an option or a cherry picker.

I realised with Long pruners I could remove the selected branches near the top of the hedge. Note this was a tough job and took quite some time. In the end I got the job done and mainly from the ground. I used a hedge trimmer where I could reach and the Long pruners where I couldn’t. I believe these were a very good purchase and will find myself using them quite a lot for high hedges and probably for tree lopping jobs where originally I was using a pole saw.

Fiskars long tree pruner review

A few things to mention about using the Telescopic Tree Pruners

  1. The base handle would be a little annoying releasing itself from the pole.
  2. The orange protection over the cutting blade could confuse the position where I was cutting.
  3. The black strap did twist a little when using
  4. Really long reach
  5. Quite easy to cut branches but when they where too thick it was hard to cut.
  6. The pole didn’t suffer much wear even after 11 hours of use… YES this was a big hedge!

Looking into the beautiful Dahlia flower with 10 Flower Facts about Dahlias

Flower Facts Dahlias
Dahlias
  1. The dahlia is named after the Swedish botanist, Andreas Dahl
  2. As a general rule of thumb plant Dahlias in the first week of November it is advisable only to plant tubers when the soil temperature is on the rise and the risk of frost is over.
  3. Dahlias love morning sun and afternoon shade
  4. Dahlias need a balance of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorous. The best fertilisers to apply are animal manures such as Cow and Sheep
  5. Dahlias grow very successfully from cuttings and the plant grows just as well as a plant grown from a tuber.
  6. If you have a choice it is best to plant the smaller tuber because the smaller one will develop its own root system far quicker that the big tuber.
  7. If you have limited space Dahlias can be grown in pots
  8. Dig and divide tubers annually because if you don’t, you run the risk of the clump of tubers rotting in the ground.
  9. The following pests can affect Dahlias: Thrips, Aphids, Two Spotted Mite, White Fly, Cut Worms, Mealy Bug, Snails, Virus and Powdery Mildew.
  10. Experiences have shown that Dahlias do not need as much water as previously perceived. Dahlias do extremely well with a drip system.

Starting with the light blue colour at first I wasn’t sure if a light blue was going to look good for a lawn mower but after a while it starts to feel normal. I always used either a black or red mower before so light blue was different for me!

To use the Mulching function simply leave the plastic insert under the catcher in place the grass can’t escape and gets mulched and simply falls back onto the mown surface. At first I had the catcher on and the plastic insert in place it was a suprise when I went to go and empty the catcher to find there was nothing in it!

The Self-Propelled function is easy to use and is set to a medium to slow speed which is alright for mowing. If want I can go faster than the self propelling allows.

The catcher is stated as extra large but compared to some other mowers I would call it about average.

The Adjustable Levers allows the levers to be set to suit the user’s height, making for a more comfortable mow. The extra large wheels will get through any terrain!

20″ Wide Cut Chassis
Mulching Capable – save time, feed you lawn with mulch
Briggs & Stratton 625EX Series Engine with ReadyStart!
Adjustable Handle Levers
11″ Large Rear Wheels

The price was $500 which is good for a self propelled. I like it and have found it cuts the grass exacly how it should I mainly cut all lawns at either 3 or 4 height. Height at 5 or 6 is usually for lawns that havn’t been cut for over a month or two. My thought is if you’re thinking about a new mower this one is a good choice for all sized lawns that don’t need a ride on mower.

This chainsaw cost me $299 at the Stihl shop and it was well worth it cut through a medium to small sized tree like butter

The sound was medium loud but nothing out of the ordinary. Very light weight and easy to use. Uses 2 stroke which is handy considering I have the hedge trimmer and blower all using the same fuel.

For information: The fuel shouldn’t be left in the machines for any longer than 6 weeks because it will go stale and damage the equipment

Remember you must have a chainsaw license to use a chainsaw

Features about this chainsaw which is from STIHL

STIHL anti-vibration system
Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to longer-term effects of blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL have therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system where by the oscillations from the machines engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles.Compensator

Compensator
This controller in the carburettor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs.QuickStop Chain Brake

QuickStop Chain Brake
Single-lever master control

Single-lever master control
All important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop are operated via a single lever.STIHL Ematic-System

STIHL Ematic-System
The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

A standard lawn mowing involves cutting the grass to between 5-10 cms (2”- 4”), normally using a petrol lawnmower. Lawn mowing will be conducted using my equipment, plus bags to take the rubbish away. If you have a large garden or acreage, a ride on mower might be required, so make sure you specify the size of the area when making a booking…please call Adam 0456700439.

lawn mowing

Edging and whipper snipping
Along with a Lawn mower I will have a whipper snipper (and other tools) to give your lawn sharp edges and stop your grass from growing onto the footpath or curbs. I also clean around garden beds, trees, and features for a clean, professional finish.

lawn mowing whipper snipper

Rubbish removal
I may use a leaf blower or broom to remove cut grass from the pathways and edges to leave a clear surface. I’ll also take away any lawn clippings, twigs, and any debris that was on the grass before cutting. If you prefer, you can ask that I leave the grass clippings for you to use as mulch or compost.

Lawn mowing does not usually include removing hard rubbish and waste from your grass. If you want to clear the area before cutting, make sure you specify this so I can include it in the quote.

Fertilising
Keeping your lawns lush and green requires regular feeding and should be part of your garden maintenance. Knowing which fertilisers to apply and when can make the difference between golf-club enviable green and corn flakes crunchy lawns. Strong, healthy lawns need less watering and are more weed resistant.

Weed killing
Keeping weeds out of your lawns will make them a more welcoming place to play, rest, and relax without worrying about prickles and spikes. Regular trimming, manual weed removal, and organic or chemical weed kill will keep your lawns looking a lot healthier, too. You might also add on weeding for your garden beds so your whole garden can look tidy.

Leaf blowing
Leaves on your grass and driveway not only look messy but can create a hazard if they get wet and slippery. I provide leaf blowing services and a garden tidy up, including removing the dry leaves.

Seeding
If your lawn has bare patches or is still getting established, you can add garden seeding to your lawn mowing service. I will have the tools, equipment, and know how to freshly seed your lawn and get it growing in.
